The purpose of the melting point tester is to identify an unknown substance and determine its purity. This accomplished by heating the material and nothing but the temperature at which it begins to change from a solid to a liquid, and the temperature, which is real at the time the change is complete.
These figures are then compared to those of known substances.
Since the melting point of a solid is easily determined and requires minimal use of the substance, it is the criterion most often used for estimation of purity of whatever substance one is testing at the time.
